Main Ingredients

  • 3 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 Tbsp black sesame seeds

Syrup Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (or oligodang)
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil (e.g., canola oil)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and peel them. Then, cut them into bite-sized pieces. Avoid cutting them too small, as they might break apart.

Step 1

Step 2

Soak the cut sweet potatoes in cold water for about 30 minutes to remove excess starch. This step helps them become crispier on the outside and ensures the syrup coats them well.

Step 2

Step 3

Drain the sweet potatoes thoroughly after soaking and place them in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil and toss to coat each piece evenly. Oiling the sweet potatoes helps them achieve a crispier texture when air-fried.

Step 3

Step 4

Arrange the prepared sweet potatoes in the air fryer basket and bake at 190°C (375°F) for 20 minutes. Halfway through, around the 10-minute mark, carefully pull out the basket and gently toss the sweet potatoes to ensure even cooking. This will result in a more uniform texture and flavor.

Step 4

Step 5

After 20 minutes of air frying, test for doneness by piercing a piece with a fork or skewer. If it slides in easily, the sweet potatoes are perfectly cooked.

Step 5

Step 6

While the sweet potatoes are baking, prepare the syrup. In a separate pan, combine 2 tablespoons of corn syrup and 2 tablespoons of sugar over medium heat.

Step 6

Step 7

Bring the sugar and corn syrup mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally until it starts to thicken and turns a golden caramel color. Be careful not to burn it.

Step 7

Step 8

Once the syrup is bubbling, immediately turn off the heat. Carefully add the air-fried sweet potatoes to the pan and quickly toss them to coat evenly with the syrup. Work swiftly to prevent the syrup from hardening too much.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of black sesame seeds and gently mix everything together. Toss carefully to prevent the sweet potato pieces from sticking to each other.

Step 9

Step 10

Your delicious and aromatic sweet potato candies are ready! Thanks to the air fryer, these are made with minimal oil, making them a delightful, less greasy, and healthier snack for everyone to enjoy. They are best served warm!
