Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Sterilize the glass jar you’ll use for the watermelon syrup. Pour boiling water into the jar, ensuring it covers the opening, and let it sit for a few minutes. This helps preserve the syrup. Turn the jar upside down to drain completely and let it air dry.
Step 2
Cut the watermelon into manageable pieces. You’ll only be using the red flesh, so discard the rind.
Step 3
Chop the watermelon flesh into approximately 1.5 to 2 cm cubes. Carefully remove any visible seeds with a knife or spoon; this will make the syrup and ade much more enjoyable to consume.
Step 4
Using a kitchen scale, measure out exactly 550g of the seedless red watermelon flesh. Accurate measurement is key to achieving the perfect flavor balance in your syrup.
Step 5
In a large bowl, combine the prepared watermelon cubes and sugar. Gently mix until the sugar is evenly distributed over the watermelon. Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes, or until the sugar begins to dissolve. Then, carefully pack the mixture into the sterilized jar, pressing down gently. Fill the jar to about 80% capacity. Pour any remaining sugar from the bowl into the jar.
Step 6
Allow the watermelon syrup to ferment at room temperature for about one day. After that, transfer the jar to the refrigerator and let it mature for another 3-4 days. This allows the watermelon’s flavor and aroma to infuse beautifully with the sugar. When ready to serve, scoop out the desired amount of syrup into a clean glass.
Step 7
Fill your glass generously with ice cubes. Next, slowly pour chilled sparkling water or soda water over the ice and syrup. This creates a wonderfully refreshing watermelon ade. If you prefer, you can also use plain water mixed with a little more syrup.
Step 8
This homemade watermelon ade is not only a delightful way to quench your thirst during hot summer days but also an excellent source of hydration. Enjoy this beautiful and delicious drink!
