Main Ingredients- 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (soaked in water)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Soak the tteokbokki rice cakes in cold water for about 10 minutes. This step helps to soften the rice cakes so they absorb the sauce better. If the rice cakes are particularly hard, you can soak them for a bit longer.
Step 2
Cut the onion and fish cakes into bite-sized pieces that are easy for children to eat and will absorb the sauce well. For a cleaner taste, you can blanch the fish cakes in boiling water for a moment to remove excess oil.
Step 3
Slice the green onion diagonally. This adds color and aroma to the dish. Avoid slicing it too thinly, as it can become mushy quickly.
Step 4
In a deep pot, combine 2 cups of water with the jjajang powder, gochujang, gochugaru, sugar, cooking wine, minced garlic, and corn syrup. Stir well to dissolve the sauce ingredients, ensuring there are no clumps. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. You’re looking for the sauce to start bubbling vigorously.
Step 5
Once the sauce is boiling, add the soaked rice cakes, cut fish cakes, onion, and green onion. Stir everything together and continue to cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are tender and the sauce has evenly coated all the ingredients. The blend of jjajang powder and gochujang creates a wonderfully sweet and slightly spicy flavor. If the sauce becomes too thick, you can add a little more water to reach your desired consistency.
Step 6
When all the ingredients are cooked through and the sauce has nicely coated the rice cakes and fish cakes, your delicious Jjajang Tteokbokki is ready! It’s best enjoyed hot. You can also serve it with a hard-boiled egg or some seaweed flakes for extra flavor.
