- 0.5 Tbsp Dashida (or MSG for umami)
- 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 3 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 4 Tbsp Soy sauce (jin ganjang)
- 5 Tbsp Sugar (adjust to taste)
- 0.5 Tbsp Dashida (or MSG for umami)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under running water until clean. If they are frozen, soak them in cold water for about 10-20 minutes to soften them before use. This ensures they absorb the sauce well and become tender.
Step 2
Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Diagonal or square shapes work well and are easy for everyone to enjoy.
Step 3
Wash and chop about a handful of cabbage into small pieces. It adds a nice sweetness and texture! Also, slice about half a stalk of green onion diagonally. Feel free to add more if you like.
Step 4
Let’s make the magic sauce! In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp gochujang, 3 Tbsp gochugaru, 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 5 Tbsp sugar, and 0.5 Tbsp Dashida. Mix well until the sugar dissolves. Alternatively, you can mix these directly into the water in the pot.
Step 5
Pour 500ml of water into a pot. Add the prepared sauce mixture and stir to combine thoroughly. Bring it to a boil over high heat, then give it a stir once it starts bubbling.
Step 6
Once the sauce is boiling, add the cabbage, fish cakes, and tteokbokki rice cakes to the pot. Stir gently to prevent the rice cakes from sticking together as they cook.
Step 7
As the rice cakes and fish cakes cook and the sauce thickens, add the sliced green onions. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to stir frequently to prevent sticking to the bottom. Let it simmer until the sauce reaches your desired consistency. A slightly reduced sauce will have a deeper flavor.
Step 8
When the tteokbokki has reached your preferred thickness, add the pre-boiled eggs and let it simmer for another minute or two. The eggs will absorb the delicious tteokbokki sauce!
Step 9
Serve the Tteokbokki in a bowl and sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish. Enjoy it while it’s warm! A pro tip: mash a boiled egg into the sauce and mix it with the rice cakes for an extra burst of flavor. You’ll love it!
