Ingredients
  • 3 apples
  • 2 Caramel Rooibos tea bags
  • 200g sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for topping)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, wash the apples thoroughly. Core them and then cut them into bite-sized pieces. Aim for pieces that are easy to handle and will fit nicely in your jar.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the cut apples with 200g of sugar and 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Gently mix everything together, ensuring the apples are evenly coated. Let this mixture sit for a while; you’ll notice the apples releasing their natural juices, creating a syrup-like liquid.

Step 3

Once a good amount of juice has been released from the apples, add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. The lemon juice not only adds a lovely tang but also helps prevent the apples from browning.

Step 4

Stir everything together again to ensure the lemon juice is well distributed. The goal here is to let the sugar dissolve and draw out the apple’s juices, rather than layering the sugar. The more juice that is released, the better the syrup will be.

Step 5

Now, prepare your jar. It’s essential to sterilize your glass jar by boiling it in hot water. Make sure it’s completely dry before use. Fill the sterilized jar about two-thirds full with the apple mixture.

Step 6

Place the 2 Caramel Rooibos tea bags into the jar, nestled amongst the apples. These tea bags will infuse a wonderful caramel aroma and flavor into your syrup.

Step 7

Top up the jar with the remaining apple mixture, ensuring the tea bags are covered. Finish by sprinkling the last 1 tablespoon of sugar over the top. This final addition can help with preservation.

Step 8

Seal the jar tightly and place it in the refrigerator. Allow it to mature for at least one day. This resting period allows the flavors to meld beautifully, resulting in a richer taste. After a day, your syrup is ready to be enjoyed!

Step 9

And there you have it – your delicious Caramel Apple Syrup is ready! When serving, include the Caramel Rooibos tea bag in your drink to enhance the sweet caramel notes and refreshing apple flavor. It’s perfect mixed with hot water, sparkling water, or even a splash of soda. Enjoy!
