Crispy Outside, Tender Inside! Oven-Baked Mackerel with Curry

Curry Mackerel

Here’s a recipe to enjoy mackerel, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and beneficial for your health, in a more delicious and healthier way. Many of you might already know this method, but if you’re still frying fish in a pan with oil despite having an oven or toaster oven, I highly recommend trying this approach. I’ve been exclusively baking mackerel in the oven for over 10 years! It saves you from cleaning the stovetop and is much better for your health, so I truly encourage you to try it this way!

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Preheating is crucial for any oven recipe! Start by setting your oven to 425°F (approximately 220°C) and let it preheat thoroughly. Place the prepared mackerel, suitable for baking, on an oven pan lined with parchment paper, ensuring the skin side faces upwards and is arranged neatly. Once the oven is preheated, carefully place the mackerel inside, then reduce the oven temperature to 400°F (approximately 205°C) and set the timer for 10 minutes.

Step 2

When the 10-minute timer goes off, the skin side of the mackerel should be nicely golden brown. Carefully remove the mackerel from the oven, increase the oven temperature back to 425°F (approximately 220°C), and then flip the mackerel over.

Step 3

Now it’s time to season the mackerel with curry powder, with the flesh side facing upwards. It’s best to gently press the powder onto the fish with your hands to ensure it adheres well. Make sure to evenly coat the entire surface of the fish.

Step 4

By the time you’ve finished applying the curry powder, the oven temperature should have returned to 425°F. Even if it’s slightly under, don’t worry. Go ahead and place the mackerel back into the oven. Reduce the temperature again to 400°F (approximately 205°C) and bake for an additional 5 minutes. This step will infuse the curry flavor deeply into the fish.

Step 5

Once the mackerel is perfectly cooked, it’s important not to leave it in the oven for too long, as it will continue to cook and can become dry and less flavorful. As soon as it’s done, promptly remove it from the oven, transfer it to a serving plate, and enjoy it while it’s warm! You’ll get to savor a delightful dish with a crispy exterior and a moist, tender interior.
