Main Ingredients
- 1 bowl of warm rice
- 2 stalks of scallions
- 1 Cheongyang chili pepper (Korean green chili pepper)
- 3 strips of long bacon
- 1/2 onion
- 1 egg
Special Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide
- 1 Tbsp mirin (rice wine for cooking)
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide
- 1 Tbsp mirin (rice wine for cooking)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the 3 strips of bacon in half crosswise to prepare them in bite-sized pieces. This makes them much easier to eat with the rice.
Step 2
Wash the Cheongyang chili pepper, remove the seeds, and thinly slice it. If you want to reduce the spiciness slightly, you can soak it in cold water for 1-2 minutes before draining.
Step 3
Trim and thinly slice the 2 stalks of scallions. Peel and rinse the half onion, then slice it thinly into strips.
Step 4
Lightly oil a preheated pan over medium heat. Carefully crack the egg into the pan. Season with salt and pepper to your preference, and cook the fried egg until the yolk is to your liking (runny or firm). Set aside on a plate.
Step 5
Utilize the remaining oil in the pan used for the fried egg. Lightly wipe the pan with a paper towel, then add 1/2 Tbsp of minced garlic and sauté over low heat until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
Step 6
Add the sliced onion to the fragrant garlic oil and stir-fry. Once the onions start to turn translucent, add 2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide, and 1 Tbsp mirin. Mix well. This forms the base of your sweet and savory sauce.
Step 7
When the sauce begins to bubble, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer until it thickens, stirring occasionally (until more than half of the liquid has evaporated). Transfer the thickened onion sauce to a separate bowl.
Step 8
Wipe the pan clean again, and without adding any oil, place the cut bacon strips in the pan. Cook over medium heat until golden brown and crispy on both sides. The bacon’s own fat is sufficient for cooking.
Step 9
Once the bacon is nicely browned, place it on paper towels to drain any excess grease for a cleaner taste.
Step 10
Now, let’s assemble your beautiful bacon rice bowl! Place the warm rice in a serving bowl. Generously spoon the thickened onion sauce over the rice. Arrange the crispy bacon strips on top, followed by the sliced scallions and spicy Cheongyang chili pepper. Finally, top with the prepared fried egg for a stunning bacon rice bowl!
Step 11
Your delicious bacon rice bowl is complete! The combination of savory bacon, flavorful sweet soy sauce, and the rich fried egg is truly irresistible. Enjoy this simple yet incredibly satisfying one-bowl meal!
