For the Bean Sprout Rice
  • 2 servings of rice (approx. 300g)
  • 2 handfuls of fresh bean sprouts (approx. 200g)
  • Red chili pepper, to taste (e.g., 1/4 to 1/2)
  • Green chili pepper, to taste (e.g., 1/4 to 1/2)
  • Green onion, white part, a small amount

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by thoroughly rinsing the rice for your bean sprout rice. Wash it 2-3 times until the water runs clear. Then, place the rinsed rice in your rice cooker pot and add the appropriate amount of water for 2 servings. Let the rice soak in the water for about 20-30 minutes. This step helps the rice cook evenly and become fluffy.

Step 2

While the rice is soaking, gently wash the bean sprouts and drain them well. Once the rice is ready, carefully spread the drained bean sprouts evenly over the top of the rice in the cooker. You can lightly mix them in if you prefer. If using an electric rice cooker, simply close the lid and press the ‘Cook’ button. The cooker will magically transform these ingredients into delicious bean sprout rice!

Step 3

While the rice is cooking, let’s prepare the vibrant seasoning sauce. Finely mince the green and red chili peppers (removing seeds if you prefer less heat). Finely chop the white parts of the green onion. If you enjoy a spicier kick, feel free to add more chili peppers. For a milder flavor, you can use more bell pepper for color.

Step 4

In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 0.5 tablespoon of sugar, 0.5 tablespoon of red pepper flakes, and 0.5 tablespoon of perilla oil (or sesame oil). Add the minced chili peppers and green onions, along with a generous pinch of toasted sesame seeds. Stir everything together until well combined. Your delicious and flavorful bean sprout rice sauce is now ready!

Step 5

Voila! Your Cha Seung-won style bean sprout rice is ready to be enjoyed. Serve the perfectly cooked rice with a generous spoonful of the prepared seasoning sauce and mix it all together. The clean, refreshing taste and satisfying crunch of the bean sprouts, infused into the rice, are truly delightful. This dish is so flavorful, it’s delicious even on its own, or you can wrap it in crispy roasted seaweed for an extra layer of taste and texture. Enjoy this wonderfully satisfying and healthy meal made with just a few simple ingredients!
