Mild Pork Rib and Potato Stew (Gamjatang) for Babies

Mild Pork Rib and Potato Stew (Gamjatang) for Babies

How to Make Nutritious Pork Rib and Potato Stew (Gamjatang) with Your Baby

After a long time, I’m making a special dish: ‘Mild Pork Rib and Potato Stew for Babies’ using pork ribs. Unlike the spicy kimchi stew I usually make with ribs, today I’ve cooked it gently with savory soybean paste instead of chili, so even my baby can enjoy it. This dish features tender pork ribs and soft potatoes, perfect for both your baby’s health and taste buds. Enjoy a warm mealtime with your whole family!

Main Ingredients
  • 400g pork ribs
  • 3 potatoes
  • 1/3 stalk of green onion

Seasoning & Broth
  • 1L water
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp baby soybean paste
  • 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce for soup
  • 2 Tbsp perilla powder
  • 1/4 cup cooking wine (mirin or sake)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Soak the fresh pork ribs in cold water for about 1 hour to remove any blood. This step is crucial for a clean and odor-free taste.

Step 2

Peel the potatoes and cut them into bite-sized pieces, suitable for a baby to eat. Chop the green onion finely; it will add a lovely aroma.

Step 3

Place the drained pork ribs in a pot and cover them generously with water. Add the 1/4 cup of cooking wine and boil over high heat for about 10 minutes. This ‘pre-boiling’ step helps remove any remaining impurities and unwanted smells from the ribs.

Step 4

After the initial boil, rinse the pork ribs under clean running water until they are thoroughly clean. Transfer the rinsed ribs and the cut potatoes to a clean pot.

Step 5

Pour in 1L of water to create the delicious broth for the gamjatang.

Step 6

Now, let’s add the seasonings for that rich, savory flavor. Mix in 1 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of baby soybean paste for a mild umami, 0.5 Tbsp of soy sauce for soup, and 2 Tbsp of perilla powder for a nutty aroma. Add the chopped green onion as well.

Step 7

Bring everything to a boil over high heat. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let it simmer gently for about 50 minutes, or until the pork ribs and potatoes are very tender. If the broth reduces too much during cooking, you can add a little more warm water. Let it cool slightly before serving to your baby!
