Reminiscing about the rice balls my mother used to pack for picnics during childhood, I’ve created a convenient version skewered for easy eating. Main Ingredients
  • 1 can (200g) Tuna
  • 10g Dried seaweed flakes (Kimbap seasoned seaweed)
  • 25g Pickled radish (Danmuji)
  • 2 Cherry tomatoes (or 1/2 ripe tomato)
  • 210g Cooked rice (approx. 1 bowl)
  • 3 Tbsp Sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a bowl of warm cooked rice, add 3 tablespoons of sesame oil. Gently mix with a spatula or spoon, being careful not to mash the rice grains. This seasoning step will infuse the rice with a subtle, delightful aroma.

Step 2

To the seasoned rice, add the drained tuna, finely chopped pickled radish, and dried seaweed flakes. Gently mix all the ingredients until evenly combined. Initially, mix lightly to prevent the rice from clumping, then, once the ingredients are somewhat incorporated, use your hands to shape the mixture into small, round rice balls. Bite-sized portions are recommended, especially for children.

Step 3

You can further enhance the appearance and flavor of your rice balls. When shaping, you can coat them with additional pickled radish or seaweed flakes for extra color and texture. Alternatively, thinly slice the pickled radish and adhere it to the surface of the rice balls, or generously coat them with seaweed flakes.

Step 4

Now it’s time to assemble the colorful rice balls onto skewers. First, thread a clean cherry tomato onto the skewer. Below the tomato, alternately skewer the round rice balls. Arranging them in a traffic light pattern – red (tomato), yellow (rice ball coated with radish), and black (rice ball coated with seaweed flakes) – makes them even more appealing.
