Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the potatoes thoroughly and steam them until tender. To check for doneness, insert a fork; it should slide in easily. This ensures they mash smoothly.
Step 2
While the potatoes are steaming, prepare the ground beef. In a bowl, combine the beef with all the ingredients for the ‘Beef Marinade’. Mix well by gently kneading. This step helps remove any gamey odor and enhances the savory flavor.
Step 3
Finely mince the onion. Minced onion adds a pleasant texture and flavor when mixed with the beef and potato base, ensuring it blends well into the patty.
Step 4
Heat a little sunflower oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the minced onion until translucent and fragrant. Once the onion is softened, add the marinated ground beef. Use a spatula to break up the meat and cook it thoroughly, ensuring it doesn’t clump together. Once cooked, remove from the pan and set aside.
Step 5
Now, the potatoes should be perfectly steamed and fluffy! Transfer the hot potatoes to a bowl. It’s best to mash them while they are still warm, as this makes it easier to achieve a smooth consistency. Mash them thoroughly until you have a smooth mashed potato texture.
Step 6
While the mashed potatoes are still warm, add the ‘Potato Dough Seasoning’ butter (1 1/2 Tbsp) and mix it in with a spatula until well combined. The butter will melt and add a rich, creamy flavor. Next, add the sautéed onion and cooked ground beef to the mashed potatoes. Mix everything together thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Step 7
Divide the potato mixture into portions and shape them into round, flattened patties, similar to small steaks. Dip each patty into beaten egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Then, generously coat each egg-dipped patty with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to help the breadcrumbs adhere. This creates a nice crispy coating.
Step 8
Lightly grease a baking sheet with sunflower oil to prevent the potato steaks from sticking. Place the breaded potato steaks on the prepared baking sheet. Lightly drizzle sunflower oil over the tops of the steaks. This helps them become extra crispy when baked.
Step 9
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them, as oven temperatures can vary. Bake until the potato steaks are golden brown and crispy. Adjust the baking time as needed based on your oven.
Step 10
Everything is ready! Spread a thin layer of the mixed sauce (tonkatsu sauce and ketchup) on the serving plate. Place the golden-brown potato steak on top. Sprinkle a little bonito flakes over the steak and serve with a side of fresh salad greens for a complete and delightful ‘Potato Steak’ meal!
