I quickly grabbed the ingredients and whipped up this super simple version. It’s packed with rich red bean flavor and chewy rice dumplings. Give this recipe a try this winter for your loved ones!
Porridge Ingredients
- 500g Red Beans (washed clean)
- 300g Raw Sweet Rice Flour (for porridge)
- 3 times water (for boiling beans)

Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the 500g of red beans 3-4 times under cold water until clean. Soak the rinsed beans in water, about 3 times their volume, for a while. Place the soaked beans and water into a pot and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. It’s important to boil the beans until they become soft.
Step 2
While the beans are cooking, let’s make the rice dumplings. Spread the 300g of raw sweet rice flour on a large plate. Gradually add small amounts of water to the flour while mixing with your hands. Knead until the dough is pliable and can be formed into small, round shapes without being too sticky or too dry. Form small, round dumplings, like tiny mochi balls, and set them aside in a bowl.
Step 3
Carefully drop the prepared rice dumplings into the boiling water. Stir gently to prevent them from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Once they float to the surface, they are cooked! Quickly scoop out the cooked dumplings and plunge them into a bowl of cold water to cool down. This step prevents them from clumping together and ensures a chewy texture.
Step 4
Boil the red beans for about 1 hour, or until they are very soft and easily mashable. Drain some of the cooking water (leaving enough to grind). Use an immersion blender or a regular blender to purée the beans until you reach your desired consistency. Some prefer a slightly coarse texture with small bean pieces for added texture, so adjust blending time accordingly.
Step 5
Return the puréed red beans to the pot. Gradually add the remaining sweet rice flour, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Once the sweet rice flour is well incorporated and the porridge starts to thicken, gently add the cooled rice dumplings. Stir gently while cooking over medium-low heat until the porridge reaches a nice, thick consistency.
Step 6
Finally, it’s time to season. Add salt and sugar gradually, tasting as you go. The balance of sweetness and saltiness is key, so it’s best to add them slowly until you achieve your preferred flavor. Adjust the sweetness and saltiness to your liking. Your simple, hearty, and nutritious red bean porridge is now ready! The rich red bean flavor combined with the chewy dumplings is absolutely delicious.
