Main Ingredients
  • 15 Vienna sausages (score them for better cooking)
  • 1/3 Onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 Korean chili pepper (finely chopped, adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1/6 Carrot (thinly julienned)
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)

Seasoning Ingredients
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1/2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 Tbsp Mirin (or cooking wine, for removing odor and adding gloss)
  • 1/3 Tbsp Minced garlic
  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup (for a sweet and tangy flavor)
  • 2 Tbsp Cooking oil (for stir-frying)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your ingredients. Score the Vienna sausages with a knife a couple of times to allow them to cook better and look more appealing. Thinly slice the onion and carrot into about 0.5 cm thick strips. Finely chop the Korean chili pepper for a spicy kick; you can remove the seeds if you prefer less heat or adjust the amount. If you’re not a fan of very spicy food, you can reduce or omit the chili pepper.

Step 2

Now, let’s make the delicious sauce that’s the heart of this Ssoya Stir-fry! In a small bowl, combine Gochugaru (1/2 Tbsp), Gochujang (1/2 Tbsp), Mirin (1 Tbsp), minced garlic (1/3 Tbsp), and ketchup (2 Tbsp). Mix them thoroughly with a spoon until well combined. Preparing the sauce beforehand makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 3

Heat a pan over medium-low heat and add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil. Add 1/2 tablespoon of Gochugaru and stir-fry it gently over low heat, being careful not to burn it, until fragrant. Stir-frying the chili flakes in oil not only enhances the color but also significantly boosts the flavor.

Step 4

Once the Gochugaru is fragrant, add the prepared Vienna sausages, sliced onion, and julienned carrots to the pan. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry rapidly for about 1 minute. You want the vegetables to become slightly translucent and the sausages to get a light brown sear.

Step 5

Now, add the pre-mixed seasoning ingredients and the chopped Korean chili pepper. Continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes, ensuring all the ingredients are well coated with the sauce. Gently toss and stir with chopsticks or a spatula to help the sauce evenly distribute. Finally, sprinkle with sesame seeds for a beautiful garnish. Your spicy and sweet Ssoya Stir-fry is ready! It makes a fantastic side dish for rice or a perfect accompaniment to a cold beer.
