Main Ingredients
  • 1 Potato (approx. 235g)
  • 115g Spam (approx. 1/2 can)
  • 2 Tbsp Teriyaki Sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup (or Honey)
  • Olive Oil (or Cooking Oil) for sautéing
  • A pinch of Sesame Seeds (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, peel the potato using a peeler and wash it thoroughly under running water to remove any dirt. Then, cut the potato into bite-sized cubes, about 1.5cm, making them easy for children to eat. Cutting them too small might cause them to break apart during cooking, so aim for a consistent, moderate size.

Step 2

To remove excess starch and ensure a cleaner flavor, soak the cubed potatoes in cold water for about 5-10 minutes. This step also helps to firm up the exterior of the potatoes, preventing them from falling apart during the simmering process.

Step 3

After soaking, drain the potatoes well using a colander. It’s also a good idea to gently pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any remaining moisture. This prevents oil splattering when you start sautéing.

Step 4

Open the Spam can and rinse the Spam briefly under hot running water. This helps to reduce its saltiness and any ‘canned’ taste, resulting in a milder, more pleasant flavor. After rinsing, pat it dry thoroughly with paper towels. Then, cut the Spam into cubes of similar size to the potatoes, about 1.5cm.

Step 5

Now it’s time to start cooking. Heat 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil (or your preferred cooking oil) in a frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is warm, add the drained potatoes and sauté for about 3-4 minutes. You’ll notice the sides of the potatoes becoming slightly translucent, which indicates they are starting to cook. At this point, add the cubed Spam to the pan and sauté for another 1-2 minutes.

Step 6

Once the potatoes and Spam are lightly sautéed, it’s time to add the delicious sauce. Pour in 2 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce and 1 tablespoon of corn syrup (or honey). Stir well to coat all the ingredients evenly with the sauce, and continue to simmer for about 2 more minutes. The corn syrup adds a lovely sheen and a subtle sweetness. Adjust the cooking time based on the size of your potato cubes and how tender you want them. They are ready when a fork can easily pierce through them. For a final touch, sprinkle with a pinch of sesame seeds for added nutty flavor. Enjoy your homemade Potato and Spam Simmer!
