Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, if your squid is frozen, make sure to thaw it completely. If it’s fresh, gently rinse it under running water.

Step 2

Hold the squid by its tentacles and gently pull the body away from the head, bringing the innards and tentacles together. Be careful not to tear the tentacles.

Step 3

Inside the body cavity, you’ll find a thin, transparent ‘squid bone’. Remove this as well. You can tell your children it’s the squid’s ‘backbone’ – they might find it interesting!

Step 4

Carefully remove any remaining bits of innards or thin membranes from inside the body.

Step 5

It’s best to remove any residual internal organs completely. Since this is for children, cleaning thoroughly helps ease concerns about potential microplastics or heavy metals.

Step 6

You’ll also need to remove the eyes and the beak (which contains the ‘teeth’). The beak can be unpleasant to bite into and chew.

Step 7

The beak is located at the center of the squid’s mouth. You can easily push it out by applying slight pressure with your finger. Make removing the beak a fun part of cooking with your kids!

Step 8

After removing all the innards, bone, eyes, and beak, rinse the squid one more time under running water. The thin membrane on the skin can be left as is.

Step 9

Now it’s time to cook the squid. You can either blanch it in boiling water or steam it. For a more tender and rich flavor, I chose to steam it. When steaming, cook for about 5-7 minutes. If blanching in boiling water, add the squid once the water is boiling and cook for just 2-3 minutes. Be careful not to overcook, as it can become tough.
