Cooking Instructions
Step 1
The key to a great hamburg steak patty is the meat! You can use just ground beef, or for added richness and flavor, mix in some ground pork according to your preference. Today, I’m using only beef for a tender texture.
Step 2
It’s crucial to sauté the finely chopped onions until translucent before adding them to the mixture. Using raw onion can release too much moisture, potentially causing the patties to fall apart during cooking. Sautéing also brings out a subtle sweetness and improves the texture. Make sure to let the sautéed onion cool completely before use.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the delicious patty mixture! In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooled sautéed onion, minced garlic, ground ginger, egg, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Put on disposable gloves, secure them tightly with a rubber band, and knead the mixture vigorously, almost like you’re washing clothes. Persistence is key! Kneading for at least 10 minutes will create a firm mixture that holds together beautifully during cooking, ensuring a moist and tender result.
Step 4
Once the mixture is well-kneaded, divide it into equal portions and shape them into round, flat patties. About one cup of mixture per patty works well.
Step 5
Making the hamburg steaks too large can make it difficult to cook them through evenly and increases the risk of them breaking when flipped. Aim for a palm-sized diameter. This size yields about 6 patties, providing two generous servings per person, making it a meal for 3.
Step 6
Lightly oil a frying pan and place the shaped patties in it. Sear them on both sides until golden brown. Once nicely browned, pour in 1/2 cup of water and immediately cover the pan with a lid. Reduce the heat to low and let the patties cook through gently. Steam them for about 5-7 minutes with the lid on.
Step 7
When the patties are almost cooked and there’s still some liquid remaining in the pan, add 1 Tbsp soy sauce and 1 Tbsp corn syrup. Simmer briefly until the sauce thickens and coats the patties, adding a wonderful glossy finish and enhanced flavor.
Step 8
Remove the cooked hamburg steak patties to a plate. Now, it’s time to sauté some vegetables in the same pan with the remaining sauce. You can use any vegetables you have on hand – onions, mushrooms, zucchini, bell peppers, etc. Chopping up vegetables that your children like and sautéing them can be a great way to encourage them to eat more veggies.
Step 9
Serve the hamburg steak patty over warm rice, topped generously with the sautéed vegetables. If your children enjoy them, a perfectly fried sunny-side-up egg placed on top will make the dish visually spectacular! My kids aren’t fans of runny yolks, so I’m skipping it today, but breaking a yolk and mixing it with the meat and rice is absolutely delicious.
Step 10
Finally, sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and parsley flakes for a visually appealing and incredibly tasty hamburg steak that your children are sure to love!
Step 11
Consider serving with mashed potatoes and some refreshing pickles for a complete and delightful meal. A spread like this will have your children happily eating their vegetables too. ^^
