Main Ingredients
- 1 small pack silken tofu (approx. 300g)
- 1 large egg
Seasoning and Garnish
- 1 tsp chili oil
- 1 tsp doubanjiang (spicy bean paste)
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- Finely chopped green onion, to garnish
- 1 tsp chili oil
- 1 tsp doubanjiang (spicy bean paste)
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- Finely chopped green onion, to garnish
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Start by preparing the silken tofu. Gently open the package and place the entire block of tofu in a microwave-safe dish. Microwave for 1 minute. This will gently warm the tofu, allowing it to absorb flavors better and become even more tender.
Step 2
In a small bowl, crack the egg and add 2 tablespoons of water. Whisk well until combined. Place this bowl in the microwave and cook for 30 seconds, just until the egg is partially set and fluffy. Be careful not to overcook; you want it to be soft and custardy. This pre-cooked egg will form a delightful topping.
Step 3
Using a spoon, carefully create a small well or indentation in the center of the warmed silken tofu. Gently pour 1 teaspoon of doubanjiang into this hollow. For an extra warm dish, I microwaved it for another 20 seconds at this stage, as I prefer my food piping hot. This allows the savory and slightly spicy doubanjiang to meld beautifully with the mild tofu.
Step 4
Carefully spoon the partially cooked, fluffy egg over the indentation in the tofu, covering the doubanjiang.
Step 5
Now, it’s time to add a burst of flavor and aroma. Drizzle about 1 teaspoon of chili oil over the top of the egg and tofu.
Step 6
After drizzling the chili oil,
Step 7
Finish by sprinkling sesame seeds for a nutty crunch and topping with freshly chopped green onions for a pop of color and fresh taste. These garnishes not only enhance the visual appeal but also add layers of flavor.
Step 8
The true delight comes when you break into the tofu. When the doubanjiang sauce and the soft egg gently ooze out from the center, it’s pure culinary bliss! Serve immediately while warm to enjoy the exquisite harmony of silky tofu and tender egg. This dish is a testament to how simple ingredients can create something truly special.
