How to Make a Refreshing Waldorf Salad

This is a classic dish often featured in culinary arts exams, and it’s my personal favorite salad due to its delightful crunch and balanced flavors.

Salad Ingredients
  • 1 fresh apple
  • 30g celery
  • 2 walnuts
  • 1 leaf of lettuce (iceberg or leaf lettuce)
  • 1/4 lemon

Dressing (Seasoning)
  • 1 tsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • A pinch of white pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by bringing a pot of water to a boil. This step is for blanching the walnuts, which makes removing their skins much easier.

Step 2

Wash the lettuce leaves thoroughly under cold running water. After washing, submerge them in a bowl of cold water for a few minutes to keep them crisp and refreshing.

Step 3

Wash the apple and peel its skin. Dice it into uniform cubes, about 1cm in size. Immediately place the diced apple into a bowl of water mixed with a little lemon juice to prevent browning.

Step 4

Trim the tough, fibrous outer strings from the celery stalks using a peeler or a knife. Dice the celery into cubes of a similar size to the apple (about 1cm).

Step 5

Add the walnuts to the boiling water and let them blanch for about 1-2 minutes. Drain them while they are still warm. Use a toothpick to carefully remove the inner skin from each walnut half. Once the skins are removed, chop the walnuts into roughly 1cm pieces, similar to the apple and celery. Set aside any smaller walnut pieces that you have chopped finely for garnishing.

Step 6

Drain the prepared lettuce leaves well and arrange them attractively on your serving plate. This will form the fresh base of your salad.

Step 7

In a mixing bowl, combine the diced apple, celery, and chopped walnuts. Add all the dressing ingredients (mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, and white pepper). Gently toss everything together, being careful not to mash the ingredients, until they are evenly coated with the dressing.

Step 8

Carefully spoon the dressed salad mixture onto the bed of lettuce on your serving plate, mounding it slightly. Finally, sprinkle the finely chopped walnuts over the top of the salad for added texture and visual appeal.

Step 9

Your delicious and crunchy Waldorf Salad is now complete! Enjoy the fresh, vibrant flavors.
