How to Make a Beautifully Layered Tofu Rice Bowl

I’ve created a layered tofu rice bowl, served cup-style, which looks as good as it tastes. It’s a visually appealing and delicious dish perfect for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients
  • 1 bowl of cooked rice (warm)
  • 1/2 block of firm tofu (approx. 150-200g)
  • 3 Tbsp canned corn kernels
  • 4 walnuts (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 stalk green onion
  • 1/4 onion
  • A pinch of minced ginger
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • A sprinkle of shredded seaweed (for garnish)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the vegetables for the topping. Finely chop the onion and green onion. Mince the 4 cloves of garlic and the ginger. If you’re not a fan of strong ginger flavor, you can use a very small amount or omit it.

Step 2

Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the chopped onion, ginger, garlic, and green onion, and stir-fry until fragrant. The vegetables are ready when they become translucent and release a sweet aroma.

Step 3

Once the vegetables are well stir-fried, season with a pinch of salt. Be careful not to over-salt, as you’ll need to consider the seasoning of the tofu and rice later.

Step 4

Prepare another pan and add 1 tsp of sesame oil. Crumble the tofu into the pan and stir-fry. It’s helpful to gently press out excess water from the tofu with a cloth before crumbling it with a fork or your hands for better texture.

Step 5

When the crumbled tofu is lightly browned, add 3 Tbsp of soy sauce and mix quickly. Then, add the canned corn kernels. Continue to cook over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced and the tofu and corn are well coated with the sauce. Cook until most of the moisture has evaporated.

Step 6

In the warm cooked rice (1 bowl), mix in the finely chopped walnuts and a pinch of salt. The walnuts will add a pleasant crunch and nutty flavor to the rice.

Step 7

Now it’s time to layer your cup rice. Start by filling your cup or serving dish halfway with the seasoned rice. Then, spread the cooked and reduced tofu mixture evenly over the rice.

Step 8

On top of the tofu, spread the stir-fried vegetable mixture evenly. Finally, cover everything with the remaining seasoned rice. Gently press down on the rice to create a firm base.

Step 9

Cover the rice bowl with a plate or a flat lid, then carefully invert it onto a serving dish to release the rice mold. Sprinkle the top with shredded seaweed for a beautiful garnish. Your delicious layered tofu rice bowl is now ready!
