  • Some green onion, sliced diagonally
  • 2 Hard-boiled eggs
  • A sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds
  • A sprinkle of black sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Keep the rice cakes frozen and use them directly without thawing. This eliminates an extra step, making it very convenient.

Step 2

The packaging includes cooking instructions and ingredient details. I’ll walk you through the cooking process below.

Step 3

Inside the pouch, you’ll find chewy rice cakes (tteok), generous slices of fish cake (eomuk), and the essential sauce. These three components make up the dish.

Step 4

Slice the green onions diagonally into about 1-2 cm pieces. This will add a fresh aroma and a touch of color to your tteokbokki.

Step 5

To prepare the hard-boiled eggs: Fill a pot with enough cold water to cover the eggs. Add 1 tablespoon of salt. Boil over medium-high heat for about 15 minutes until the eggs are fully cooked. After boiling, immediately transfer the eggs to a bowl of cold water. Once cooled, peeling will be much easier.

Step 6

In a wide pan or pot, add the frozen rice cakes (no thawing needed!). Pour in 450cc of water and add the entire tteokbokki sauce packet. Stir well to combine the sauce with the rice cakes.

Step 7

After mixing the sauce and rice cakes, add the fish cakes. If you’re including hard-boiled eggs, add them now. Once it starts to boil, the rice cakes and fish cakes will expand. Be careful not to cook over high heat for too long, as this can cause them to puff up excessively and affect the texture. Simmering for about 3 minutes over medium heat is ideal for achieving a chewy texture for the rice cakes and tender fish cakes.

Step 8

Finally, add the sliced green onions to the pot and simmer for another moment to finish. This completes your delicious Gukmul Tteokbokki.

Step 9

As the name suggests, this is a ‘Gukmul Tteokbokki,’ meaning it has a deliciously soupy consistency with a rich broth. Enjoy the rice cakes and fish cakes, and don’t forget to save some of the flavorful broth to mix with rice for an extra treat!
