Main Ingredients
- 500g sweet potatoes (choose large and firm ones)
- 100g canned corn (drained)
- 60g mozzarella cheese (adjust quantity to your preference)
Cream Sauce Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp butter (for rich flavor)
- 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour (or cake flour)
- 2 cups milk (approx. 400ml)
- Pinch of salt (to taste)
- Pinch of black pepper (for aroma)
- 2 Tbsp butter (for rich flavor)
- 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour (or cake flour)
- 2 cups milk (approx. 400ml)
- Pinch of salt (to taste)
- Pinch of black pepper (for aroma)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, thoroughly wash the sweet potatoes. Cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm cubes. Place them in an oven-safe dish (e.g., Lock & Lock Glass) and cover with plastic wrap. Pierce the wrap a few times with a fork; this helps to prevent the sweet potato from drying out during microwaving. Microwave for about 5 minutes until tender. Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the sweet potatoes and your microwave’s power.
Step 2
While the sweet potatoes are cooking, let’s prepare the delicious cream sauce. Melt the butter in a frying pan over low heat. Be careful not to let the butter burn.
Step 3
Once the butter is melted, add the flour and stir continuously with a spatula or whisk for about 2-3 minutes, until it forms a smooth paste and has a slightly nutty aroma. Avoid browning the flour too much; cook until it’s just lightly golden.
Step 4
Gradually pour in the milk (2 cups) while whisking or stirring constantly. The mixture might seem thick at first, but keep stirring to ensure a lump-free, smooth sauce. It’s important to incorporate the milk slowly to achieve a silky texture.
Step 5
Continue to cook over medium-low heat, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens to a gravy-like consistency. It’s ready when you can draw a line on the bottom of the pan with your spatula that holds its shape for a moment. Remove from heat and season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Your creamy, flavorful sauce is now complete.
Step 6
See? We have a wonderfully thick and smooth white cream sauce. It smells deliciously buttery and milky.
Step 7
Lightly butter your oven-safe baking dish. This step is optional but adds extra flavor. Spread half of the microwaved sweet potatoes and drained corn evenly on the bottom of the dish. Then, pour half of the prepared cream sauce over them.
Step 8
Layer the remaining sweet potatoes and corn on top. Finally, pour the rest of the cream sauce to cover the ingredients completely. Layering ensures a beautiful presentation and great texture.
Step 9
Top generously with mozzarella cheese. Ensure you are using an oven-safe dish. (Important Note: Some Glasslock products are not oven-safe; please check your product’s specifications before using it in the oven. I used the Lock & Lock Glass oven-safe model, which is suitable for both microwave and oven use.)
Step 10
Place the dish in a preheated oven at 200°C (390°F) for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown. Cooking time may vary depending on your oven.
Step 11
Voilà! Your delicious Sweet Potato Gratin is ready. Serve it warm, stretching the melted cheese for that irresistible bite. The sweet, savory aroma will tantalize your senses, and its hearty nature makes it a perfect snack or light meal. Enjoy your delicious creation!
