Tteokbokki Ingredients
  • 300g Tteokbokki rice cakes (Use soft wheat cakes or chewy rice cakes, as per your preference)
  • 2 Hard-boiled eggs (optional, add as desired)
  • 1/2 Green onion (approx. 20cm length, sliced diagonally)
  • 500ml Water (2.5 cups)

Spicy & Sweet Seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste, heaping)
  • 3 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust for spice level)
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar (adjust for sweetness)
  • 2 Tbsp Soy sauce (for umami)
  • 1 Tbsp Oyster sauce (enhances flavor!)
  • 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or rice syrup, for gloss and smoothness)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

In a pot, combine 500ml of water and 2 Tbsp of gochujang. Stir well to dissolve any clumps of gochujang. (Tip: Dissolving gochujang in cold water prevents lumps and ensures even mixing.)

Step 2

Add 3 Tbsp of gochugaru for vibrant color and a pleasant spiciness. Feel free to add more if you enjoy a spicier kick.

Step 3

Stir in 2 Tbsp of sugar. The sweetness is key to balancing the spiciness of the tteokbokki.

Step 4

Add 2 Tbsp of soy sauce and 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce to create a deep, savory flavor profile. Oyster sauce is a secret weapon for deliciousness!

Step 5

Bring the prepared sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally. The sauce will become even more flavorful as it bubbles.

Step 6

Add the tteokbokki rice cakes and stir to coat them evenly with the sauce. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has thickened.

Step 7

When the rice cakes are almost done, add the sliced green onions during the final stages of cooking. Let it simmer for a bit longer. The fresh aroma of green onions will elevate the taste of your tteokbokki.

Step 8

Finally, stir in 1 Tbsp of oligodang to give it a beautiful sheen and a smooth texture. Your delicious tteokbokki is almost ready!

Step 9

Serve with the warm, hard-boiled eggs. (Tip: You can also mash the eggs and mix them with the sauce for an extra treat!)

Step 10

Your spicy and sweet gochujang tteokbokki is complete! Enjoy it hot for the best flavor. Bon appétit!
